Special features of hybrid drives for boats
Hybrid engines are available in different power ranges. You will find all variants from 10 kW up to 53 kW (72 HP) power in our shop. Depending on your requirements, you will need about 1-2 kW power per tonne in displacement mode and exponentially more in gliding mode.
Your hybrid engine can be controlled via remote control or via a fixed throttle in combination with a steering wheel. With existing shaft systems, the electric inboard can be easily flanged to the current shaft. The propeller can thus continue to be used, for example, and in some cases, even the old inboard can still be used.
The Electric-Inboard are powered by an external battery, which is connected to the e-drive. Here we recommend modern lithium batteries or AGM batteries for maritime applications, depending on the application. In addition, you will need a charger and solar cells for recharging are available as an option.
Differences between the individual drives - What do I have to pay attention to?
The selection criteria vary depending on the boat and application. One of the most important criteria for us is the volume. There are e-drives with gears that produce a high-frequency whirring sound. These are significantly quieter than combustion engines, but still relatively loud.
And there are loudless electro inboard where absolutely nothing can be heard. We find the peace and quiet on your boat should not be disturbed by anything. We therefore recommend a purely electric drive on the one hand, but in the case of the electric motor, clearly a silent model without a gearbox. There is little difference between hybrid engines for leisure or commercial use. The hybrid drives are technically on the highest level and, apart from leisure applications, are mainly designed for larger boats or ships. Advantages and disadvantages of hybrid engines in boats
On the one hand, electric inboards have the conventional advantages of an electric motor. The E-Inboards are quiet, clean, and very efficient. In addition, the engines have much better handling, maneuverability, and more thrust in the lower speed range. E-Boat engines are also cheaper to maintain, safer than combustion engines and also environmentally friendly.
Hybrid drives that are designed in parallel or inline can only be (dis)assembled with technical skills. Depending on individual use, the concept can have advantages or disadvantages. Having two engines in a boat naturally has disadvantages in terms of purchase costs, space and weight.
On the other hand, the perfect mixture of a quiet and environmentally friendly drive can be combined with the higher range of a generator. Especially for longer distances, this has advantages. Installation of a hybrid engine on boats
Inboards are especially common on medium to large boats and sailing yachts. However, other drives can also be used as hybrids, such as a sail drive or outboard. The electric motors are almost maintenance-free and are significantly cheaper in operation than combustion engines. The weight of the electric motor + battery is comparable to the combustion engine + fuel tank.
The assembly is more complex than with an outboard and should usually be carried out by an expert. Especially when it comes to parallel hybrid or inline hybrid. The boat should also be lifted out of the water, which may require a crane. The existing wave system can usually be reused. The inboard motor is mounted firmly in the hull of the boat.
